The Punakha Festival

At the head of the line of warriors is this huge bowl of chang, barley beer, a favorite
among the local population (along with ara, rice wine). This is one of the reasons why
the warriors were so rowdy. However, I did not partake - it was morning and there were lots of
bugs floating in the beer.

Here's a male resident of Punakha in his Sunday best gho. The white silk scarf wrapped around
him is called a kabney, used for special occasions and can identify a person's rank in the
communuty.
The lump in his cheek is not chewing tobacco,
but doma (known also by it's more popular name paan). This is a combination of
beetlenut and lime, which kept in the mouth, creates a stimulating and mildly euphoric effect.
The unfortunate results of chewing paan is lots of red spittle on the ground.
