Phil's All Embracing Bhutan Slide Show
Scenes from Sonada, India
Our next destination is a monastery in Sonada, in the hills near Darjeeling, where Kalu Rinpoche
spent many years teaching. Palden and many of her students have come to this temple to meet
Kalu Rinpoche and attend empowerments. The temple here is also dedicated to Kalu Rinpoche
in a more direct and real way.

In the large and refurbished main temple hall at Sonada is a shrine dedicated to Kalu
Rinpoche.
However, this is not a statue, but the real embalmed and gold plated body
of Kalu Rinpoche. It's mind-blowing to be looking at his actual physical body.

While most Buddhists are cremated or have their body parts fed to vultures, it is not
uncommon for great masters to have their bodies enshrined in some fashion, as seen here.
The shrine had a very strong presence that we found very moving.
