Scenes from Sonada

Many temples have displays and arrangements of tormas, which is a ritual cake representing a deity. It is made of barley flour and ghee or yak butter. It is most often shaped like a tapering cone. Standing about 6-8 inches high, the barley flour is moistened and rolled into its form, and the butter is immersed in cold water to stiffen it, then formed into petals which decorate it. However, I was told that some of these were made of plastic.

In many temples, the walls are filled with displays of statues of various. In this case, they're small statues, in contrast to the massive Punakha dzong, containing statues of 2 to 3 feet tall on every wall.
