Phil's Mondo India Slide Show
Alai Minar and The Red Fort

Continuing on my first tour of Delhi...

Around 1300AD, Ala-ud-din, another Mughal emperor, decided to build a second tower that would be twice the height of Qutab Minar, but after he died, the project fizzled out. So what is left is a nice monument to someone's ego, but an impressive looking ruin, nonetheless.

Lal Qila, The Red Fort, is a humongous structure near Old Delhi, which extends for 2 kilometers, and up to 33 meters in height. Shah Jahan, the emperor who built the Taj Mahal, started construction on The Red Fort in 1638. But he never had much time to enjoy this monument, being deposed and imprisoned by his son, Aurangzeb. It's a real pleasure to go inside and leave behind the noise and chaos of central Delhi - one thing you learn quickly is to take advantage of places that minimize the over-abundance of sensory stimulation common to India's cities.
