Phil's Mondo India Slide Show
Contrasting View from the Red Fort

This pair of photos summarizes the contrasts one sees in India - signs of enormous wealth amidst vast poverty and awful living conditions.

This is a white marble fountain in the main quarters with inlay of other precious stones - quite impressive considering this was built in the 17th century. Though not seen in the photo, a small aqeduct feeds the fountain to the left.

Looking over the back side of the Red Fort, towards the Yamuna river is this scene. At first I thought it was a permanent tent city, but I believe it is a temporary site for an Islamic festival taking place at the huge Jama Masjid mosque nearby. I'd say it is a notch or two below, say, Woodstock, no? At least these people have a place over their heads, in constrast to the large population of beggars in many Indian cities.
