Phil's Mondo India Slide Show
Sights of Kochin/Kerala
One of my most enjoyable day outings was a trip through the backwater canals of Kerala, leading
me into a land of jungle villages and gorgeous scenery. I highly recommend this area for
a vacation.

Entire villages have as their mainstay crop the delicious coconut. You can buy them on most street corneres in
the major cities - a machete swipe to take off the top, insert a straw, and presto, delicious, cool coconut juice.
Here's a boatlaod going to destinations unknown in a local village.

The backwater canals are fairly shallow, and the major form of propulsion is done by pushing off the bottom with a
long bamboo pole. The density of the backwaters had a real Southeast Asian feel to it, which makes sense, as southern
India is close to and on the same parallel as SE Asia. Sort of felt like Martin Sheen going down the Mekong delta in
Apocolypse Now - I was wondering if the helicopters were gonna show anytime.
