Sights of Madras/Chennai

Chennai is the new name of Madras, as with Mumbai for Bombay...

This is a local paan vendor on the streets of Madras. Paan is a mixture of spices, including the betelnut, which has a mildly intoxicating and addicting effect. You pop part of the mixture in with the leaf and slowly chew. Once done, you spit out whatever is left over, adding another awful red blotch to the street. Red blotches are everywhere in India.



Surprisingly enough, one of the more interesting tourist spots is St. Tome Cathedral, for reasons that you'll see on the next page. Southern India has a large population of Christians. It's a beautiful church.
