Phil's Mondo India Slide Show
Sights of Varanasi

There was much to see in Varanasi, and the people were as much an event as the ghats, the river, the temples and sights in general

One of the many sidewalk vendors just outside my hotel. I am particularly proud of capturing the cow's butt on the right of the photo.

Varanasi's value as a holy city is shared by both Hindus and Buddhists. Sarnath, as you see here, looking a little like Disney's Magic Kingdom, is the site of Gautama Buddha's first sermon to his first 5 devotees, who were his friends and fellow renunciates. Sarnath, just outside the city limits of Varanasi, is a pilgrimage site for Buddhists from around the world. I also managed to come at a time of a festival, and enjoyed the multi-national and multi-cultural qualities of Buddhism, in contrast to the deep marriage of Hinduism and Indian culture.
