Sights of Varanasi

The following photos depict one of the main functions in Varanasi - it is considered extremely auspicious to be cremated along the banks of the Ganges here in Varanasi, and to have one's ashes spread on the river.

This is knows as the "Manikarnika" or "burning" ghat, a place where there may be several cremation ceremonies going on at once. I spent a few hours there and it is a very intense place, watching the funeral ceremonies and bodies burning.

It takes an enormous amount of wood to completely cremate a human being - re something to the order of several hundred kilos of wood. Unfortunately, this practice is depleting many a forest around Varanasi.

The price of cremation varies greatly to accommodate the rich and poor of India, but some cannot even afford the minimal of cremation costs, so they dump the bodies into the river - I passed by one yellow, bloated body around this section of the river. Downstream and not far away, people are bathing and brushing their teeth...
