Young Monks At the Paro Dzong

Dzongs are also places for monastic training and education for young boys (and to a lesser degree, young girls), and Paro Dzong hosts scores of young monks.


Four young monks watch us enter Paro Dzong. You have to understand that it's not that warm and all that most of these monks have is a sleeveless top and a shawl.


Young monks of various age in the afternoon sunlight. Young monks can enter the monastery as early as four or five years of age, often coming from very poor families. Some here look around five years of age.
