Phil's All Embracing Bhutan Slide Show
Touring the Paro Dzong

The Paro Dzong is one of many massive dzongs (a dzong can be a combination of fortress, monasteries and seat of government) around Bhutan, some of which are considered highly sacred in Vajrayana Buddhism. Paro Dzong is also world famous for a very special reason, which I'll explain shortly.

These dzongs look large, but as you get closer to them, you can begin to see how massive these structures are. The little slit on the white section of the wall, to the left of the stairs is a small window for shooting arrows or guns. One group of western tourists was leaving just as we were arriving.
