Phil's All Embracing Bhutan Slide Show
Traditional Construction Equipment in Bhutan

Bhutan has only recently built paved roads throughout the countryside, and Thimphu has been the site of a building boom in the past decade. Though I saw many pieces of modern construction equiipment in Bhutan, they still hold true to some traditional means.

This scaffolding may look a bit "homespun" and crude, but bamboo, as used here is incredibly strong, and can hold great amounts of weight and handle big stresses, almost as strong as certain metals.

While travelling from town to town in Bhutan, you will pass many a road crew building or repairing roads. The crews are almost entirely Nepali or Indian, as the Bhutanese will not do this kind of work, apparently. Here a young man is cracking rocks in downtown Bhutan. You see this all over the country, people cracking big rocks into smaller rocks, an almost sysiphean task.
