Phil's All Embracing Bhutan Slide Show
Scenes from Trongsa

Our first stop in central Bhutan was the town of Trongsa ("new village") and the adjoining town of Yueli. Our one day stopover including the a visit to the massive Trongsa Dzong, which was under reconstruction.

The Dzong looks impressive, built on the side of a mountain above the Mangde Chhu (River). It was built in 1543, extended in 1644 and served as the ancestral home of the Bhutanese Royal family. Trongsa was the connecting point between east and west Bhutan, and trails that connected both parts of the country went straight through the Dzong. There are 25 temples within the Dzong.
