Phil's Mondo India Slide Show
In the Himalayas!

After a day or more of journeying, being rocked around in the back of the taxi that you see in the middle of the photo, we reach our destination of the town of Chopta, which is little more than a truckstop to serve pilgrims journeying to Himalayan temples that are shrines to modern Hinduism, blessed by Shankara.

This little Checker-like taxi may not look like much, but it can sure take a beating and keep going - they probably can outdo many of our tame jeeps and SUVs. Chopta here is at 9000 feet above sea level, so the air is thin for walking, as I soon found out. The brick archway is the beginning of the path to the Tsungnath Shiva temple lying at 12000 feet. The trees above have that windwept and beaten look that ou see on many a mountain top.

We arrived in late afternoon in clear weather, which was perfect for taking picture, but it was already a touch cool. Nonetheless, the views in all directions were breathtaking, and this, as well as the next few pages, are but a few examples of the beauty of the Indian Himalayas.
