Phil's Mondo India Slide Show
Himalayan Sights

While walking (uphill at 10-12000 feet, ugh!) to the Tsungnath temple, there were so many beautiful views that I burned through a lot of film...

This is a view looking northwest, with the slightest touch of Alpenglow. What was remarkably surprising about the Himalayas was how steep they were, like giant lengthy spires thousands of feet high.

After a walk uphill that I'll never forget, almost fainting several times from altitude exhaustion (nothing like driving from sea level to 10,000 feet for an uphill hike), we get to the Tsungnath temple only to find it closed!

Nevertheless, I wasn't too disappointed - I meditated for awhile outside the temple, soaking up the vibe. It's hard to fathom just how old this and other temples in nearby areas, such as Badrinath and Kedernath, are - they were Buddhist temples before Shankara converted them into Hindu temples, and they were around long before the Buddhists arrived.
