Phil's Mondo India Slide Show
Chaos in Varanasi

Some of the most memorable pictures of India that are often seen are of people bathing in the Ganges, and the Kattika festival on the full moon in October offered me a lot of photo ops.

Leaving at dawn on a boat taxi, I was totally taken by the sheer numbers of people trying to reach the Ganges river for a morning bath. It seemed like the entire city was trying to stream through the narrow streets, alleyways and ghats to get to the river. The noise and the chaos was amazing.

The chaos was at its peak at the central ghat of Varanasi, the Dasaswamedh ghat. Dasaswamedh mean "ten horse sacrifice", a place where the Hindu Lord Brahma sacrificed 10 horses. This is normally a huge plaza and every square inch has been swallowed by the sea of humanity. I could not imagine what it would be like to be in that mass of people.
