Sights of Varanasi
A group of devotees bathe from one of the outlying ghats. The men will strip to their underwear, while the women will completely submerge in their saris. Also understand that the water here is incredibly dirty, and many people do get sick by bathing here in Varanasi. There is a sewage treatment plant outflow pipe not far from this ghat, but the Ganges has some near miraculous capacity to destroy bacteria.

Some of the architectural variety around the banks of the Ganges. Maharajs and the wealthy from all parts of India have built residences on the banks here, creating interesting architectural diversity. The waters of the Ganges sometimes overflows - in 1962 it reached up to rightmost balcony. |
