Phil's Mondo India Slide Show
Sights of Varanasi

Not far from the Asi ghat, in the southern part of the city, is the Durga Temple, also known as the Monkey Temple, but I didn't see any monkeys.

Many temple grounds and inner sanctums of temples are closed to non-Hindus, and the Durga temple is such a case. But I was allowed to go on the roof of the courtyard to take a photo of the inner temple.

Durga is the fierce form of Lord Shiva's consort Parvati, and the temple is died in red ochre. This spire is typical of Northern Indian style temples.
