Phil's Mondo India Slide Show
Sights of Varanasi

Here are a couple of examples of the colorful natives of Varanasi.

Now, this guy was a most interesting fellow. He sat under a tree near my hotel all day, every day I was there, and just sat there - then every so often, he would start yelling at the top of his voice at some person or thing that no one but he could see. Crazy sadhu or just crazy, I don't know.

But I did approach him for a photo, offering him 10 rupees, and he then beamed a semi-toothy grin - I guess he wasn't so crazy after all - 10 rupees can buy you several meals in Varanasi. He look perfectly sane when I looked into his eyes.

That is perhaps the world's largest turban on his head, which may be his bedsheet.

Every once in a while the girls go out to check out the boys bathing in their underwear. Even though there were many more Hindu tourists viewing the bathing scene than westerners, I still felt at times a bit voyeuristic and intruding on a sacred and very personal event.
