Phil's All Embracing Bhutan Slide Show
Drukgyel Dzong Area

About 14km west of Paro is Drukgyel Dzong, the scene of one of three major battles whereby the Bhutanese repelled the invading Tibetan Army (I bet you thought the Tibetans were a peaceful group, no?). Legend has it that a false entrance to the Dzong fooled the Tibetans into a courtyard where they were slaughtered. Another legend says that the Bhutanese retreated to a nearby thicket, the Tibetans followed and because they had long hair, their hair got caught up in the branches and then were attacked by the Bhutanese. Unfortunately this Dzong, located at the western end of Paro Valley, burned in 1951.

Near the Dzong is this chorten (Tibetan) or stupa (Sanskrit), one of many in the countryside.

An artsy shot of a doorway within Drukgyel Dzong.
